April’s focus – Criminal Justice Reform
While I’m still pleased with the criminal justice reforms passed in the most recent New York State budget, it’s been well over two years that we’ve been waiting for the results of an investigation into racial bias in New York prisons. The investigation ordered by Governor Cuomo was due to the reports of significantly higher punishments for Black and Latino prisoners. We need to see the findings to get a better understanding of how people are being mistreated, how much of it is due to racial bias, and what can be done to address this problem.
