Week of 9/18/2017:
Environment: Stop Michael Dourson’s Nomination to the EPA on Wednesday, 9/20. Julie Wash, co-chair of our Environmental Action Committee, reports that the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works will convene a hearing tomorrow, Wednesday, September 20th, to discuss the nomination of Michael Dourson for Assistant Administrator of Toxic Substances at the EPA. Call your Senators immediately to urge them to oppose his nomination.
Dourson is a darling of the chemical industry who will further gut existing environmental protections. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reports that:
[o]n behalf of the chemical industry, Dourson has repeatedly sought to weaken safety standards for PFOA, a carcinogen formerly used to make Teflon, and perchlorate, a jet fuel chemical that hinders the development of babies’ brains. He’s also worked to greenwash chlorpyrifos and other herbicides linked to cancer and brain damage; the food chemical diacetyl, which gives workers “popcorn lung”; and TCE, the cancer-causing chemical made infamous by the book and movie “A Civil Action.” Other polluters that have paid for Dourson’s services include Monsanto, Dow and the Koch brothers. Health Care: Defend Your Health Care – Stop the Graham-Cassidy bill #KilltheBill. With a September 30th Senate deadline looming, Republicans have hatched a new Affordable Care Act repeal bill known as “Graham-Cassidy”. To create further pressure for Republican senators to support this latest version of Trumpcare, House Speaker Paul Ryan and the Trump administration recently announced that they reject the bipartisan Obamacare stabilization plan being pursued by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Patty Murray (D-WA). http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/19/obamacare-stabilization-bill-status-242875. To stop this treachery, please take one or all of the following steps this week:
- Call Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to encourage them to vote NO to Graham-Cassidy;
- Call Republican senators using the automated dialer at https://my.ofa.us/Make-A-Call. (If you’d like a script for your call, Indivisible has prepared a few options at https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/trumpcare-another-name-graham-cassidy/.); and
- Use Indivisible’s peer-to-peer automated dialer (at https://www.trumpcareten.org/calls-to-kill-trumpcare) to call like-minded voters in red states to encourage them to call their Republican senators.
Like previous versions of Trumpcare, Graham-Cassidy (so named for its sponsors, Senators Lindsay Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy [R-LA]) takes health care away from millions of Americans and disproportionately hurts women. How serious is this situation? Although Senator Susan Collins may not be persuaded to vote for this new bill, Senator John McCain – who defeated the last version of Trumpcare when he also voted “no” in July – has indicated he is still considering the bill. Senator Lisa Murkowski – who consistently opposed Trumpcare in July – has stated she could vote for this bill if Alaskans are not disadvantaged.
